How AI Agents Actually Work
Mujtaba · · 7 min read
An AI agent is not magic. It is a language model placed inside a loop, given a goal, a set of tools and a way to observe the results of its own actions.
The loop
- Observe the request and current state
- Reason about the next best step
- Call a tool — a CRM search, an API, a database query
- Check the result and decide whether the goal is met
Everything interesting about production agents lives in the details of that loop: which tools exist, what permissions they carry, how failures are handled and when a human is pulled in.
What makes agents reliable
Reliability comes from narrow, well-described tools, explicit stopping conditions, an evaluation set built from real cases, and observability that lets you replay every decision the agent made.
The best agents are boring: clear tools, clear limits, clear escalation.
